The ‘Old’ Gods

The Kostrin Faith has not always held sway in Solista, (and it still does not in other parts of the world.) And in Solista there are a few remnants of pre-Kostrin faiths.

The Vanien Cults

The Vanier and the related Vanien Cults, are very, very old.

Collectively these beings are called the ‘Vanier’ by human scholars and ‘Jhorran HaKah’ by the Elves, which is an ancient Elvish phrase that translates roughly as ‘First with Power/Magic’

According to some scholars, the Vanier are Beings that came into the world either contemporaneously with, or shortly before, the appearance of Elves, Dwarves and Humans in significant numbers. The exact relationship is subject to debate. Some feel that it was the Vanier that introduced the three races to the world. Some feel that it was one or more of the races (most likely the elves) that opened the Way for the Vanier to enter the world, while others feel that the events were unrelated and coincidental. Most agree that at some point, the Vanier acted to elevate the three races in prominence and power in an otherwise hostile world.

Exactly what the meaning of ‘Jhorran HaKah’ is remains uncertain. Elvish history is quite clear that the elves came into this world with the knowledge of magic. Were the Jhorran HaKah present before the Elves? Were they something that came with the Elves? The Elves are certainly aware of these ‘old gods’ and even honor and respect them as beings of power (assuming they are still present.) But at no time have they ever worshiped them in anyway. Only humans have been known to worship the Vanier, and then in seemingly limited fashion since no true temples to any of the Jhorran HaKah, active or ruined, are found anywhere in Solista. There are many, many shrines and statues and carvings dedicated to them, scattered widely across the land and now mostly overgrown, forgotten or defaced and damaged by Kostrin clerics and followers, but no evidence of any organized or structured worship.

Most Elvish sages equate the Vanier with the Zamoran ‘Qrath’ which the Zamorans call the ‘Children of Ollitith.’ Not all sages are in agreement regarding this. (Zamoran sages do not offer their opinion of such heresy!) Some human sages, especially those of a Kostrin or Balan religious inclination, see the Vanier as another variety of Demon or Devil, citing as evidence the fact that those Diabolical Beings seemingly lacked access to the world until after the Vanier arrived. Dwarven sages will tell you that the Vanier were/are, servants of Morodin, but offer no evidence beyond their belief. It is generally agreed that if the answer exists it is to be found buried in the oldest and most secret of the Elvish Archives or in the desert libraries of the Zamoran city of Thanos.. As a result, most people, even educated people, know next to nothing about the Vanier, beyond them being obscure, prehistoric pagan deities of their less civilized ancestors that were long since done away with by the Enlightenment of Kostris (or Bala.) Only a handful of human sages have delved into Vanier history, and both the Kostrin and Balan religious authorities are not kindly to those who have made a study of the Vanier. Elvish sages, and even some Dwarven sages, are more knowledgeable and open to discussing the topic since they do not fear reprisal or persecution from religious authorities.

Early human cultures often worshiped Vanier as Gods. These deities were generally localized and limited in their scope and interests. Being identified as the God and/or Goddess of a particular mountain or lake or of a tribe or city. This is considered by sages to be the origin of the numerous statues, idols and shrines that remain. Though the lack of major centers of worship is a puzzle. Some Vanier cults can still be found along the edges of the ‘civilized’ lands and out in the wilds, but most are small and weak and very localized in extant.

DM Note: The Vanier Cults ARE NOT suitable for PC Clerics. Though a Fighter, Ranger or Thief from some distant backwood area may still honor the Old Gods, there is no divine aid available and making such beliefs public in the Kostrin or Balan lands would be a mistake.
